The world has no room for cowards. We must all be ready somehow to toil, to suffer, to die. And yours is not the less noble because no drum beats before you when you go out into your daily battlefields, and no crowds shout about your coming when you return from your daily victory or defeat. - Articlesubmissions.net

Steps To Take When Buying a Pre-Owned Truck in Canada

Unfortunately the fast talking used car salesmen cliché can still be true even to this day. Even though there have been many laws put in place to protect the consumer, and much information available to keep consumers informed, potential buyers tend to forget about the golden rule: Caveat emptor, or “ buyer beware". To ensure that you are not buying a lemon, here are five tips that may help you with buying a used car.

Tips for the Private Sale

1 If this car is so good, why is it for sale? - Ask the seller why they are selling the car. Try to force a quick answer by putting them on the defense, if the seller hesitates they may be hiding something about the car.

2 Known Defects - Ask the seller to point out all known problems. While doing your own inspection if you find obvious problems that the seller may have overlooked, there might be more wrong with the used car then they have told you.

3 Puddles, Stains & Leaks - Look for stains and leaks in the driveway.

  • Purple puddles indicate transmission fluid leaks.

  • Black or Brown puddles and stains indicate an oil or transmission fluid leak.

  • Rust colored stains indicate a leaking radiator.

4 Proof-of-Service - Ask for the maintenance records, proof of oil changes and tune-ups. If the seller can’t produce them, for all you know the oil has never been changed.

5 Rebuilt Used Cars - The gaps in the seams of the car should be the same distance apart at the top and the bottom of all panels. Uneven gaps or small dents suggest there may have been some accident damage. Paint should match on all panels, and beware of body-kits and custom paint jobs. They may look cool, but they could be hiding damage. Look for over spray on plastic parts, around lights, and mirrors.

Remember taking the used car to get a proper inspection by a mechanic prior to purchasing it is the most effective way of ensuring you won’t get stuck with a lemon.

Tips for Dealerships

Dealers may also be purchasing used vehicles from the U.S., and may even unknowingly sell you a car that has had flood damage. Before leaving the lot, follow these easy steps to see if the vehicle has had any water damage.

Flood Damage - If you find any rusting in these places, it may have had extensive water damage and it is best to move on. Look for rust on:

  • metal holdings under the seats

  • spare tire

  • crowbar

  • door hinges

  • ack

When going through a dealership, it is always best to ensure you are buying a used car from a reputable dealer.

Still not sure if you are getting a lemon?

There are many organizations that offer background checks on used vehicles. Carproof.ca offers complete reporting from all Canadian jurisdictions for title and accident history.
